Presidents Report

It’s been a year of progress and of consolidation with plenty taking place – both on and off the bike.

Pleasingly, membership continues to grow with another 11% increase. This follows the 19% increase the previous year. And the trend looks set to continue with, already record affiliations for the new year.

Ironically, participation in our rides has not increased and has in fact decreased during the cooler months. Whether this is a glitch or a trend is one thing I will be observing in coming months. As always, I welcome members comments.

I feel that I must make one negative comment this year. Leading a ride can be an onerous and thankless task but I am frequently observing some lack of responsibility by Ride Leaders. For example, Leaders who are absent from their rides sometimes do not delegate. Many rides start late, leading to a culture of tardiness by members. And we must never, ever leave anyone behind and unaccompanied.

Are these trends contributing to a lack of ride participation?

I ask all Ride Leaders to remember their training and responsibilities and remain diligent.

Otherwise, the year has been overwhelmingly positive.

We have achieved much, as the following list shows, but, most importantly I am pleased to say that all occasions, whether they be on or off the bike have taken place in an atmosphere of friendliness and fun:

Life membership was awarded to (a very surprised) Judi Puru.

Our happy and sore team in the Dragon Boat Regatta

Successful away rides to Cowra & Narooma.

New cycling shirts, resplendent in distinctive orange.

Sale of club bikes.

Another great Christmas Party, this time at Greendales, Pyree.

Decision to hold a Gala Dinner Dance for our 2017 20th anniversary.

Issuing of emergency contact bike tags to all members.

Continued advertising of Club activities in local media.

Informative Talks given to meetings by Derek Jorgenson regarding proposed bike paths around Berry, by Chris Bellamy on NZ Bike Trails & Katie Bell representing Bicycle NSW.

400 respondents to the Bike Survey instigated by us and carried out by SCC.

Much fun, sweat, satisfaction and good results from SBUG teams in the Huskisson and Nowra Triathlons.

SBUG President declares himself fastest electric Ko-Karter.

Member Rob Cleary for inviting us to his House Party and entertaining us in Camelot and then Month of Sundays with the Nowra Players.

Consultation with Council regarding strategic options for shared pathways over Moona Moona Creek Huskisson and Chris Creek Sussex Inlet.

SBUG Face book site started and adjudicated by Rob Cleary

Great Dami Im concert and Thai dinner.

Bike Week ride assistance given to SCC

All this was made possible by your happy and intelligent Committee people and their continued efforts throughout the year. Thank you all.

It’s a long list that underlines the worth and value of membership in the Shoalhaven Bicycle User Group for those that want to avail themselves of what we can offer.

I look forward to more of the same in 2016/2017 – our 20th Anniversary year.

And I urge members to consider standing for a Committee position in our vibrant club.

It is a most important and rewarding role.

Ride Coordinator’s Report

I would like to thank all ride leaders for their commitment to the task of leading rides

and a special thank you to Menno who has been able to fill in on several extra times.

And Jan Furyk for her support on Thursday rides. Thank you one and all.

Sometimes it may seem that we don’t get a lot of riders on some rides. I would like to point out that

we have a ride every day except Tuesday & Friday that is quite a few rides to choose to ride on each week.

The next 6 months rides will be worked on to the web site Tuesday 18 October.

I would appreciate ride leaders and anyone who has suggestions for rides to please come forward with an email or phone call to advise of different rides or even rides they would like included in the calendar for the next 6 months, all suggestions most welcome!

Always enjoy and ride safe.

Publicity Officer’s Report

The South Coast Register has been providing similar space allocation each week and varied size photos and text. When special events are planned eg. Bike Week or the Gala Dinner Dance, we will need to arrange with the SCR for a special article to be inserted in the paper.

Tonight I will not be standing for the position of Publicity Officer and unless someone else accepts the position of for 2016/17 there will be no further weekly media releases although I am happy to still manage the website updates and weekly updates to the rides calendar.

Wayne Beckenham

Membership Secretary Report

The final SBUG membership for last year, 2015/16, was 69 members.

This year we have had 7 new members join the group but some existing members have moved away or not rejoined. Currently 66 members have renewed membership for 2016/17 and 2 more have yet to finalise forms or payment giving a total of 68 so far.

During the membership renewal period this year some members suggested some minor improvements to the on-line membership application/renewal form. These improvements have been carried out and the system seems to be working well with no more reported problem

Wayne Beckenham

Social Secretary’s Report

The year started with New Year Party at 789 Illaroo Road, Tapitallee. We took over from Paul Taylor after Christmas 2015 and moving to our new home we had a slow start to the year but plenty of events for the future.

First outing a major flop that was the river cruise to Greenwell Point.

Electric Go Karting at Albion Park was a great and well attended social event ending with a lunch at Shellharbour.

Christmas in June with Life Membership awarded to Judi Puru was a great night where we dined, danced and had a wonderful evening.

The Dami Im concert at Shoalhaven Entertainment Centre was a fantastic night which will be remembered by all along with a dinner at River Thai.

Publicity Officer’s Report

The media report in the South Coast Register has been going okay with the paper providing similar space allocation each week and varied size photos and text. When major news or events are planned eg Bike Week or the Gala Dinner dance, we need to arrange with the SCR for a special article to be inserted elsewhere in the paper. An Article on the Shoalhaven Bike Survey was published in the SCR on Wednesday 6 July and a piece on Judi’s life membership award was printed on Friday, 15 July.

Wayne informed the meeting that he will not be standing for Publicity Officer this year. After two years in the role and one more as acting because no-one else would take on the role, it is time for someone else to take it on at Septembers AGM.

Ride Leader Coordinator Report.

Peter Hewlett absent.

Mel – Last Sunday was going to be the Berry Rotary Cyclothon, with SBUG assisting but the council insisted on too many regulations costed at $5000 so the event was cancelled.

Narooma weekend away 22-24th July, 2016. Friday familiarisation and welcome ride around town with about 12 particiapants. Saturday we had 20 riders including some local Eurobodalla riders approx. 40km return to Tilba, Sunday 17 riders to Dalmeny. Weather was mostly good. Excellent Italian meal and some pub disco on Saturday night.

On behalf of the club, thank you to Wayne and Kathy for excellent organisation and a fun fitness weekend.

Social Secretary Report

Les Absent

Mel: Email sent re Dami Im, 13th August concert at Nowra EC. Booking for Riverside Thai before, all welcome, even if you don’t go to the show. Must tell Les if you want to go to Thai.

Nowra Players are presenting “Month of Sundays” starting soon. Propose 3rd September for SBUG mob. Details to be sent around.

General Business

The floor was given to Katie Bell representing Bicycle NSW.

BNSW Conference 13th 14th August in Newcastle will focus around strategic plans that councils go through, to give BUGs a chance to “compare notes” as far as advocacy. Preferable to have a member who is familiar with these procedures. We do have a contact RMS delegate on local council but feel more could be done for local bicycle riding and infrastructure. Such as promotion and getting outcomes for problems we identify and the conference will provide knowledge about who to go and see to get results.

Mel: requested that BNSW support our local requests better and correct the “Sydney centric” perception.

Katie talked about encouraging local BUGs to be involved in the decision-making for four year plans to ensure things are done in our favour, to get RMS to fund upgrades and new projects.

Attendance at the conference will inform delegates what they can do to increase action that will result in improvements to bike riding facilities at the local level.

Wayne: did the Shoalhaven Strategic Plan, written about two years ago, go to BSNW (upgrade existing, mobility plan etc)?  Not recalled.

A variety of people will be presenting ways of writing submissions, understanding engineering jargon, social media, ways to work together better.

Mel to email to see if there is anyone would like to go.

Questions:

Judi: BNSW was investigating weekends away. What happened? Katie said she will need to investigate, probably didn’t happen due to funding.

Discussed Bike week, which is being planned more closely with council this year to increase participation. BNSW sell discovery rides to council: a led ride pitched to council to get their constituents ways to cycle around the area.

Wayne: Push On list of all bicycle rides event site. We found a few months ago that we needed one area to provide a link to BUG websites to get more information about rides, variations, including cancellation due to weather.

Katie: wants to provide information about rides and workshops eg about bike maintenance that can be found. Katie admitted people had had difficulties with it, perhaps need to have Google calendar option.

Cath: Are there any plans for any “big rides” like Victoria and Queensland.

Katie: BNSW not aiming to be organiser of big events, just support others who organise them.

Mel: Why are Bicycle Vic and ACT cheaper?

Katie: Be wary that the insurance may not completely cover you. BNSW is further investigating. Our insurance covers things like commutes to and from training, broken bones, counseling benefits, up to $50, 000, up to full hour of legal advice, and another 10% off other legal costs including conveyancing.

Sharyn: Need for more safe places for locking up bike while shopping in town.

Tony: difficulties in getting keys for lock up boxes at stations – you had to send money to Sydney to get keys. Need to set it up with a local centre eg bike shop.

SBUG 20th year Gala Dinner Dance

The ball will be held at the Nowra Golf Club, 4 March, 2017 to coincide with 20 years of SBUG.

Tom McDonald is putting together photos of the SBUG over the years.

There will be a meeting August 16, 2016 at Cath Bennett’s to discuss further planning for the ball.

Other:

Now that Tourist Centre has moved we need to state where to meet for rides precisely for new riders. IE, in car park under the Helicopter.

Bike Week Ride – 25 September, 2016
After much discussion with Shoalhaven City Council, Road Safety Officer, Kathy Wiseham and other staff of the Traffic Unit regarding the possibility of staging a special Bike Week ride in the Nowra/ Terara area it was decided that due to the cost of traffic control plans, traffic management and other issues required for temporary road closures, it is not feasible to organise the ride for this year. Bridge Upgrades – Moona Moona Creek, Huskisson and Chris Creek, Sussex Inlet
As reported at the last SBUG meeting, Shoalhaven City Council have been successful in obtaining a grant under the Active Transport Funding 2015-16 financial year to commence the planning for a shared user path bridge crossing at Moona Moona Creek, Burrill Street Huskisson, and Chris Creek, River Road Sussex Inlet.

After feedback from various Community Groups including SBUG, Council has requested McDonald International Engineers to proceed as follows for Moona Moona Creek Huskisson:

  • Incorporate a viewing platform at the northern end of the bridge.

Council has also requested the Engineers to proceed as follows for Chris Creek, Sussex Inlet:

  • Option 1 – Stand-alone and single span
  • Provide a width of 2.5m in lieu of 2m originally proposed
  • Incorporate the railing style as requested by the Sussex Inlet Forum

Proposed stages of the project are;

  • 2015 – 2016 Initial Strategic Options Assessment and Community Consultation

Bridge Upgrades – Moona Moona Creek, Huskisson and Chris Creek, Sussex Inlet

Shoalhaven City Council have been successful in obtaining a grant under the Active Transport Funding 2015-16 financial year to commence the planning for a shared user path bridge crossing at Moona Moona Creek, Burrill Street Huskisson, and Chris Creek, River Road Sussex Inlet. Council has initiated community consultation with representatives of community groups to discuss the options and to gather information for the development of the conceptual design drawings for the selected option.

On behalf of Shoalhaven BUG, Mel Gillott and Wayne Beckenham met with Council’s Project Manager, Steve Barry, on 7th April, to outline our comments and recommendations on Council’s Initial Strategic Options Assessment for the upgrading of the two bridges.

Our recommendations to Council are as follows;

  • Strongly request that both bridges have a width of 2.5m, given the need for passing safely in both directions on the bridge.
  • Approach alignments need to be at least to Australian Standards for bicycle use
  • The stand-alone bridges adjacent to the existing bridges is preferred
  • Decking material and structure to be bicycle friendly, i.e. similar to the shared user path bridge at Collingwood Cove, no longitudinal joints,
  • Access for disability and mobility in accordance with AS1428
  • Seek comment from the Shoalhaven Access Advisory Committee
  • Appearance similar to the shared user path bridge at Collingwood Cove
  • Signage and line marking are an essential component
  • Avoid bollards

Proposed stages of the project are;

  • 2015 – 2016 Initial Strategic Options Assessment and Community Consultation
  • 2016 – 2017 Design Documentation
  • 2017 – 2018 Construction (Subject to Grant Funding being obtained)

MINUTES OF THE MEETING HELD AT BOMADERRY BOWING CLUB ON 3 February 2016

Prior to meeting starting Derek Jorgenson, Vice President of Berry Chamber of Commerce, spoke to us about the new bicycle tracks that are being planned to link Berry, Shoalhaven Heads and Gerroa. Based on very successful Queenstown model of 130km of trails.
260km are planned here linking existing trails/ 50-60km roads. Plan to develop the sides of rail tracks as they have 13.5-15m clearances either side. RMS also happy to have trails adjacent to the new highway, and there will be sections of old highway that will become available for use.
The plan will take up to five years to complete, designed for the leisure cyclist/ families. Extends on the Rotary project from Moy Hill. To be maintained by council.
Les Cornish asked how we could assist. Derek suggest we build up advocacy for the project, National Parks would be a good place to start with suggestions to improving the current sand tracks through the Park area adjacent to Seven Mile Beach: tree mulch on the walking tracks has worked well on the walking tracks at Shoalhaven heads- may be a “National Park friendly” solution?
Mel thanked Derek for coming along to share this exciting information with the SBUG, and gave our support to the project.

General Business
Bicycle Riders Survey- Mel Gillott
Mel. Julie and Amanda revised survey. Drafts were placed on tables. General opinion was they were easy to complete. Suggestions to add older age group, and allow more space to add details at the bottom. To be sent out to schools, bike shops, council rates for completion.
Bike Week – Mel to be attending upcoming meeting with Council. More members invited to come along – see Mel

Try a Tri available free to those who haven’t done one before.
Course: 200m swim, 10kn bicycle ride, 2km run.
Mel to send out email to determine those interested.
New Bicycle Rules- Mel
Bicycle Australia has requested that protests be made regarding certain new fines.
General consensus was that fines while exorbitant, are okay if money is used to educate drivers to the fact that bicycles are entitled to road use and that most riders have licences and cars and pay for the use of roads anyway!
Sydney – Gong ride on Sunday 6.11.16
Club Patron and club President has suggested involvement. Willing to hire/ drive minibus. Concerns raised as to donations going to the charity- suggestion made to donate ourselves. Register with Mel if interested.
Ride Leader responsibilities- Tony
Tony asked about the First Aid kits that were purchased for ride leaders. Ride leaders in attendance said they had theirs. Call in kits that may be held by riders who aren’t leading at the moment.
Following her experience on the recent Point Perpendicular ride, Julie suggested that leaders give description of the ride course when there are new riders to any course, and to consider the experience and health of riders to suggest ride options. Again thanks go to all ride leaders because without them rides could not take place!

          • Produce simple form that could go out to a variety of sources: papers, schools, council website, SBUG website, library, tourist information

Mel and Amanda to create a survey form
Bike tracks could be promoted at caravan parks and accommodation later

 Publicity Officer’s Report
The space allocated to the weekly SBUG report in the South Coast Register news paper has recently been substantially reduced. Both the written report and photographs have been slashed to fit into a much smaller area in the paper. This is due to a major change in focus of the paper to move to a “digital first platform” to “reach a much larger audience”. After the first release of the new format paper, two weeks ago, I met with Courtney Ward, SCR Sports Editor, to discuss the very unsatisfactory changes to the SBUG article published on 23 September and he assured me that it was due to teething problems in getting the first edition to press and that our space allocation would not remain as a single column, 9 inches long. Previously our report was often a half page size including a 3 column wide photograph.
In the third edition of the new style SCR, published on 7 October, the report was given more space with a half page allocation and a large photograph. Hopefully this format will become the norm again.

 Presidents Report:
Firstly I am grateful for the club’s support in my endeavours to preside over you this past twelve months. Not only support from a strong and conscientious committee but also from the whole membership. It has been a most rewarding, informative and productive year. My first priority after attaining President was to build up our membership and I am pleased to say this was achieved. Last financial year the membership closed at 62, a 19% increase on the previous year. Hopefully this is set to continue with about 55 members already registered for 2015 – 16.
We have achieved much this year as the following list shows, but, significantly I am pleased to say it has been done in an atmosphere of friendliness and fun:
Life membership was awarded to retiring president Jim Florence
Major upgrade to SBUG website
Automation of on-line membership form
Opening of clubs PO Box
Bike Week ride assistance given to SCC
Committee training re. Website access
One Ride Leaders course held
Successful rides in Myrtleford area thanks to Les & Anne Cornish
Change of meeting venue with benefits to club
Attendance at SCC Community Stakeholder workshops and continued advocacy for cycling            at Council and State level.
Membership year changed to coincide with financial year
Regular ride trips to Albatross Museum, Robotic Dairy & Oyster Farm.
Updated and more modern club Logo accepted.
Successful weekend rides and socials at Jamberoo.
Nick Boyd, RMS guest speaker on new Shoalhaven bridge topics.
CPR information and demonstration evening.
Introduction of sealed membership/emergency contact cards for all members.
Successful long weekend rides and socials with Eurobodalla BUG in Moruya area.
And last but certainly not least the many varied and enjoyable social events organised throughout the year.
Yes, it’s a long list that underlines the exceptionally good value for our $20 membership fee.
Again I thank my happy, coherent and relevant team for helping to implement the many initiatives.
Already we have more exciting initiatives planned for 2015/6.  These include participation in easy local Triathlons, new cycling shirts, rides in Cowra area, Dragon Boat festival and the first ever BUG Ball!
I hope you will join me in looking forward to the next twelve months – the clubs nineteenth year since formation, and I urge members to consider standing for a Committee position. A most important and rewarding role.
Melvyn Gillott

Ride Leaders Report
During the year it has been good to see a new group of BUG riders become BNSW accredited ride leaders. We now have 16 members accredited that can lead rides.
The ride calendar is needing another 6 month up date and if possible I would like a meeting at my home Friday 6 September at 3pm. Any leader unable to attend could you please email or phone me to let me know what ride or rides you would like to lead.
The weekends away have been a great social and riding success. First Jamberoo Pub where we were joined by a couple of Kiama riders Phil and Cookie. I would like to thank Tom for driving the support vehicle.
Moruya weekend again a time to ride and socialise with the local Eurobodalla BUG. Thanks to Mel for organising the weekend and sorry I couldn’t be there as I had a skiing trip organised prior to finding the Moruya date.
The next trip away is at Cowra being organised by Les. I am sure it will be another great time away.
I hope all riders on today’s ride enjoyed the different route and hopefully the coffee was up to a good standard for our President Mel.

Publicity Officer’s Report
The weekly report in the South Coast Register seems to be going well although recently, photos have not been published each week due to lack of space in the newspaper. After discussion with the sports editor of the SCR I have reduced the length of the report by referring readers to the website for the standard, Saturday, Monday and Wednesday rides and only providing details of the Thursday and Sunday rides, which change each week. Hopefully this may result in having our photos included each week.

Publicity Officer

Membership Secretary Report

History of Shoalhaven BUG Membership
In 2006 before we had an official membership database we had a few informal lists held by a couple of members. One spreadsheet compiled from these lists contained 107 names of all riders who came on any ride, once or multiple times.
Before the introduction of annual membership fees in March 2013 the membership base was around 50 riders but not all decided to become paid members and on 25 May 2014 official membership was only 35 riders.
By 30 June 2015, after a concerted effort to attract new and past members, the membership had risen to 62 members. Membership for the current year, 2015/16, now stands at 55 members.
After some minor twigging, the on-line membership application/renewal form is working well with no more reported problems. We have also had good feedback on the Membership Cards and Emergency Bike Tags we sent out to new and renewing members this year.

Dinner and shows including Roy Orbison, Allen Bros & ABBA. On Friday twenty of us are attending  a play Noises off and dining at an Indian restaurant.
In addition we enjoyed weekends at Jamberoo and Moruya thanks to Peter Mel and Jo.
I would like to thank people for their suggestions, participation and support.  Judi for back up with organising, booking numbers and payments.
So if you enjoy these outings bring them along to the meeting and get involved! It’s easy and fun to organise!

Peter reported that a few safety issues had been raised recently. Issues were discussed and it was agreed that an email be sent to all ride leaders reminding them of the responsibility of safety on all rides.
Publicity Report
Wayne reported that the weekly report in the South Coast Register seems to be going well with photos being published each week and most weeks the report has been a half page size. After the acceptance of the new SBUG logo last meeting, most of our documents, forms and the website have now been updated with the new logo. Judi asked that the Wednesday ride be promoted in the media report.
Membership Secretary Report
Wayne outlined some historical membership statistics. In 2006 before we had an official membership database we had a few informal lists held by a couple of members. One spreadsheet compiled from these lists contained 107 names of all riders who came on any ride, once or multiple times, not all became regular riders.
Before the introduction of annual membership fees in March 2013 the membership base was around 50 riders but not all decided to become paid members and on 25 May 2014 official membership was only 35 riders.
By December 2014, after a concerted effort to attract new and past members, the membership had risen to 52 members. The current membership stands at 56 members which is a record number since we have been keeping our official membership records.
The on-line membership application/renewal form is working well with no reported problems. We have had good feedback on the Welcome email we send out to new and renewing members.
A couple of members have had problems accessing the website rides calendar on their Smartphones. With so many types of phones it is difficult to give specific instructions covering all phones but if anyone has issues please feel free call Wayne on 0400 487 501 and he will attempt to assist.

Also the weekly report to all members and the inclusion of this report in the website News was being well received.

Wayne reported that there now 52 members which equals last year’s numbers.
Some additional information has been added to the online membership application form on the website to simplify the process of filling out the form.
Social Secretary’s Report
Paul thanked all who supported the dinner at The Lookout Café and thanked Judi for organizing the finances. For the next event Paul will enquire about a ‘barefoot bowls’ evening to be held in the early new year. Paul suggested the possibility of having raffles at some of our social events to increase funds.
SCC Bike Plan Implementation
There are no updates as the final meeting for the year was held in November. Bob Lavender attended a meeting of Community Infrastructure Planning with other cycling representatives. The group asked that cycling infrastructure such as bike racks, water stops, and informative signage is included in the planning process. They also emphasized that road shoulders should be maintained for the safety of all cyclists and road users.
General Business
Update of SBUG Logo
As SBUG is an incorporated group it’s necessary to add ‘Incorporated’ or ‘Inc’. to all SBUG documents, the website and the SBUG logo. At a recent committee meeting Geoff Vercoe pointed out that as SBUG is ‘Incorporated’ the SBUG logo needed to reflect that. President Mel suggested that the logo design could be updated as well. A sample of existing logo and new proposed logo will be sent out to members for their comment.
SBUG Website
Bob reported that there were 523 visits to the website during November, 2014 with 284 visits being first time visits. Wayne has added some new photos to the website in the past month and Bob has upgraded the website pages to meet our incorporation requirements. John Vagg has provided a quote for website training for our newly elected executive. Bob recommend that this training be approved by the meeting.
Website Training
Motion moved by Bob Lavender that $250 be approved for the website training of 4 members by John Vagg. Jim Florence seconded. Motion carried.
Ride Leaders Course.
To date Jim still hasn’t heard back from Bicycle NSW regarding a ride leader’s course.
Correspondence Secretary Position Vacant
Due to Geoff Vercoe resigning as correspondence secretary the position is now vacant. Mel is asking for nominations to fill this position.
Road Safety
Wayne brought to the meeting some photos that had been emailed to him for possible use in media reports. The photos showed several riders at a regroup standing on the road only a short distance from double unbroken lines, which is a potential safety issue, and felt that this would not promote the group in a positive light. The meeting suggested that the SBUG Ride Coordinator be contacted to email all ride leaders and remind them of their responsibility to make riders aware of complying with road rules and general safety procedures.

SCC Bike Plan Implementation
Bob Lavender reported on the recent meeting
The SCC Bike Plan Implementation Committee met on Monday 3 November and recommended the following;
1. Shared Pathway Program – Confirms completion of Ulladulla-Burrill Lake (8/257) and Matron Porter (9/269) as appropriate high priorities (and happen to be high political priorities)
Following the rescoring the following other projects have emerged as the next priorities for off road path (Shared pathways) projects:
o Moona Moona Creek (Bridge) Huskisson 9/312 (need funding for survey/design in the first instance and likely 12-18 months lead time for AHIP process)
o Parson-St Vincent Ulladulla 8/257 (northern final stage of Ulladulla-Burill Lake) – easy to complete
o Deering Street – Lighthouse Ulladulla 8/311 (two stages) need 12 – 18 months lead time for survey/design and AHIP process
o Chris Creek (Bridge) Sussex Inlet 7/520 (need funding for survey/design in the first instance and possible AHIP process)
o Highway Bomaderry – 7/472 – easy to complete
o Tomerong Street and Sydney Streets Huskisson 7/435 – easy to complete
o Croobyar Road Milton 6/496 (lead time required for survey/design, could be complicated by the need for associated road works and still some unknowns regarding development impacts)
2. On-Road Priority Bike Routes – All on-road priority bike routes listed in Appendix 4 of the Shoalhaven City Bike Plan will receive a priority treatment as Rehabilitation priorities/Repairs/Black Spot Funding (as available)
? Confirmed that the Bike Plan required Council to consider wider sealed shoulders on all rehab jobs
? Confirmed that relevant road engineers have been made aware of the Bike Plan requirements and that where wider sealed shoulders can’t be provided that where feasible line marking shall reflect 2 x 3m travel lanes and 2 x 1.5m minimum road shoulders (wider to be considered where justified)
? Acknowledged the SBUG most desired routes to be improved be:
1. Riverview Rd – Ferry Lane – Terara Rd – Jindyandy Lane – Greenwell Point Rd. Widen shoulder and install signage. (BP score 8)
2. Bolong Rd – widen shoulder and install signage (BP score 8)
3. Jervis Bay Road – Woollamia Rd – Widen road shoulder and install signage (BP score 7)
? Acknowledged all other on road cycling routes noted in the Bike Plan
? Acknowledge that Council also actively seeks grant funding opportunities including “Black Spot” and “Safer Road” funding wherever criteria can be met and this included widening of shoulders, in addition to Council’s normal rehab program.
Planning and Tourism – Kathy Wiseham and Bob Lavender liaise with Shoalhaven Tourism and RMS about cycle route signage and promotional material* to support both on-road and shared pathway cycle infrastructure.
*Bob said that there has been no response from executive to date. Could the authors of previously prepared tourist information assist with the current review. Anyone willing to assist please contact Bob Lavender

President’s Report:
Thank you for allowing me the privilege of being the President of the Shoalhaven BUG again this year. The Shoalhaven BUG has been going strong for seventeen years and it is a credit to all involved that it is still going strong. Member numbers are around the same as last year when we first started our membership list, and although numbers on rides vary from time to time it seems they are all well supported. We must remember that when the BUG first started we had one Sunday ride a week, and now we have a choice of five per week. My only concern for the future of the BUG is the ageing demographic. I don’t know what the answer is but it is a challenge we must meet if the BUG is to be as viable in the next seventeen years as it is today.
In our other role as representatives of the local cycling community, I am proud of the BUG’s leading role in pushing the Shoalhaven City Council to formulate a long overdue Bike Plan. We need to keep a watch on how this plan develops to keep the Council honest.
The BUG is not a one man band and success is due to team work. I’d like to thank all committee members and members for the support they have given me over the last three years as President. In particular Bob Lavender for the effort he puts into the website and his leadership role in pushing the Council for the Bike Plan and being on the Council Bike Plan committee, Judi Puru for her role as Treasurer and the very difficult task of coordinating the Sunday rides and keeping the calendar up to date, Jan and Rod for their efforts in publicizing the BUG, Kathy for managing the meeting minutes, and Wayne for his tireless efforts in keeping the membership details up to date and the behind the scenes assistance he has given Judi with the difficult job of ride coordinator. Last but not least I’d like to thank all of our regular ride leaders Tom, Judi, Peter and Jan, and the many Sunday ride leaders who make our cycling program possible.
For the past seventeen years I have either been the BUG Secretary or President, and I will not be accepting any nomination for these or any other positions on the committee. The reason for this is not because these are arduous jobs, but because I feel it is in the best interest of the BUG to have new, fresh, enthusiastic people with new ideas in these positions. It is easy to get stuck in a rut and I am looking forward to a revitalised BUG under new leadership. I will remain an active BUG member and offer the new leadership all the support they need for a smooth transition.
Jim Florence
President 2013/14
Accepted: Menno Van Doorn, seconded Ray Martin
Tom McDonald acknowledged Jim’s contribution over the past 17 years having carried out the position as Secretary for most of that time and the last few years as President. New President Mel Gillott also acknowledged Jim’s time and efforts carried out in those roles.
Member Secretary’s Report:
Current membership of the Shoalhaven Bicycle User Group is 42 members including 11 Bicycle NSW Accredited Ride Leaders. The numbers last year were 52 members and 12 Bicycle NSW Accredited Ride Leaders.
The SBUG Membership Application/Renewal form will soon be available, for online applications, on our upgraded website. Improvements to the website are currently in progress. Access to read and print the Membership Application/Renewal form, Rides Registration Sheet and Incident Report Form will also be available.

Current balance Bendigo Bank $2,421.98
Petty Cash 57.00
Balance $2,478.98
Report was not available at AGM and consequently not accepted.
Publicity Officer Report:
The weekly report in the SCR continues without change, though now the photo is presented in colour, which enhances our article. The Shoalbug Yahoo network continues to be a useful medium for publicising SBUG news and activity. The SBUG website is also being used for updating members, and informing the community of our programs, and involvement in promoting and encouraging safe cycling. Thursday rides continue to attract a regular core group of between 6 and 10 mountain bike riders. The riders have explored new trails, and have been active in planning trips away to cycle outside of the Shoalhaven/Illawarra area. Despite our best efforts at publicising and programming easy rides over a couple of months, the participant riders and numbers remain much the same. Thanks once again to Rod Pierce for his assistance with the SCR reporting, whilst I have been on leave.

Ride Leader’s Coordinator’s Report

Tom McDonald has expressed concern re the future of the Saturday morning meander as he is going away for a long period in mid February and most of the regulars will also be away over the same period. Tom has also indicated he will not be available every Saturday when he returns. Bob volunteered to act as a point of contact for the ride while Tom was away and Jim advised that he would be ride leader when Tom wasn’t available if the ride remained viable. Jim will discuss further with Tom.

Membership Secretary’s report
There was no report as the Membership Secretary was absent on holidays.

General Business

1.SHOALHAVEN BIKE PLAN
Bob advised the meeting that the Bike Plan had been approved by Council but expressed concern that the plan may stall if we are not proactive. Bob volunteered to write to the Council asking to form the review committee as soon as possible, with BUG representation to be included on the committee.

2.BIKE NORTH VISIT
Judi advised that about 20 Bike North members would be visiting Huskisson on 11th, 12th, 13th March. A general discussion was held regarding rides we could host for them. Judi expected them to forward more details and it was decided to hold off until next meeting to discuss in more detail.

3.WOMEN IN SPORT
Judi reported that an easy ride would be held on Saturday afternoon March 14th.

5. DONATED BIKES
Jim reported the donated mountain bikes were being stored at Jan Furyk’s home and were now available for use. Terry Threlfall volunteered to do an initial service on them and he will contact Jan to arrange a mutually convenient time.

6. MEMBERSHIP RENEWAL
Jim reminded the meeting that membership renewals were due in March.
A general discussion was held regarding the necessity for members renewing their membership to fill in the form. Jim stated that chasing up these forms was an onerous task that was left up to a couple of members, and that in this digital age members could pay their membership electronically or deposit it in the bank manually, and the Treasurer could advise the Membership Secretary as memberships were paid. To ensure members details were kept up to date it was suggested the Membership Secretary could send an e mail when memberships were due asking members whose details had changed to reply.
Bob moved that these be changes accepted and it was passed unanimously. Jim will discuss further with the Membership Secretary when he returns from holiday. It should be noted that the proposed changes will only affect renewals and not new memberships.

7. SOUTH NOWRA HIGWAY UPGRADE
A general discussion was held regarding lack of, or poorly planned cycling infrastructure on parts of the South Nowra Highway upgrade. Bob stated that he thought the sections in question were not yet complete. Bill volunteered to get some feedback from cyclists he knows who use this route regularly, and Bob volunteered to contact the relevant RMS engineer for more details. To be carried over and discussed further at next meeting.

8. PROPOSAL TO CHANGE MEETING VENUE AND TIMES
This proposal had been carried over from last meeting. Judi had suggested a change of venue and earlier time slot may encourage more members to attend the meeting. A general discussion was held and at this stage the general consensus is to maintain the status quo. However it was decided to carry this over until next meeting and more details of what was on offer from various clubs regarding availability of meeting rooms.

9. OVERHANGING TREES ALONG SHOALHAVEN HEADS ROAD
Ron advised the meeting that he had approached the Council regarding dangerous overhanging trees on Shoalhaven Heads and that he was not satisfied with the outcome. Bob volunteered to contact the Council Tree Management Officer and ask that the BUG be informed of the outcome.

10. ILLAROO ROAD SHARED PATHWAY TELSTRA PITS
Ron advised the meeting of his frustration regarding the dangerous Telstra pits along the shared pathway, as Council and Telstra seem to think it is each other’s responsibility, and will do very little to address this dangerous situation. It was the opinion of the meeting that Council is responsible for the pathway, and if Telstra needs to repair these pits Council should take responsibility to liase with Telstra. Bob volunteered to contact the relevant Council Officer (Edward Braddick) and if necessary the General Manager.

11. ILLAROO SHARED PATHWAY
Further to the previous subject there was a debate/discussion regarding the status of the Illarroo Road path. There is no signage indicating this is a shared path. Jim will contact Council regarding signage.

12. WEB SITE PHOTOS
A general discussion was held re photos on the website. The reason they are not updated is lack of expertise within the BUG. Judi asked Ron if he would consider taking on this task and suggested the BUG should pay for training if necessary. Ron said he would consider the proposal and discuss further at the next meeting.

Shoalhaven BUG President’s Report 2013
Thank you for allowing me the privilege of being the President of the Shoalhaven BUG this year. There is a lot that goes on behind the scenes that the President of any organisation has to deal with but my job has been made much easier by the support of not only others on the committee but other BUG members. It is a credit to all members that the BUG is still going strong after sixteen years.
In particular I’d like to thank Maggie Cooper for the time and effort she has put into being the Rides Co-ordinator. I’d also like to thank Paul Cooper and Judi Puru for the assistance they have given Maggie in this difficult task.
Judi has also been a big support in her role of Treasurer and unofficial Social Secretary, and she can always be relied on when I need assistance or advice.
I’d also like to thank Jan Furyk for the effort she puts into another difficult task of publicity officer, and Rod Pierce for the assistance he gives her during her absences.
Bob Lavender has been a great support in his capacity as Vice President, the BUG representative on the RMS community forum, the role he has played as a BUG representative on the Shoalhaven Bike Plan working group, and the ongoing task of webmaster.
Our Ride Leader’s are an important part of our group and I would like to thank Peter Hewlett, Judi Puru, Jan Furyk and Tom McDonald for the efforts they put into our regular Monday, Thursday and Saturday morning rides. I would also like to thank all of our other Ride Leaders who put in a great effort in leading the Sunday rides and standing in for Judi, Peter, Jan, and Tom when necessary.
When the BUG first started we had one ride per week and now we have a choice of three on Saturday mornings as well as the Monday, Wednesday, Thursday and traditional Sunday rides. We also supported the RMS sponsored Bike week and convinced the Shoalhaven City Council we needed a Bike Plan. We have BUG representatives on the Bike Plan working group and we are once again recognized by the SCC as a cyclist’s representative group within the Shoalhaven
Although a lot of people have come and gone over the years we still have a healthy membership and our rides are generally well supported. However I am reminded when I look back through old photographs and records that the demographic of our membership is ageing and would welcome any suggestions to reverse this trend.
In 2011 we became incorporated and although this was forced upon us I’m of the opinion that it is a positive step. Largely because of the BUG becoming an incorporated body we have updated our constitution to more clearly identify who our membership is, and we now have an annual membership subscription, rather than voluntary Sunday ride donations, and a Membership Secretary whose task it is to maintain a membership record. We also made changes to the constitution to recognize members who have served the BUG above and beyond normal expectations in the form of life memberships, and clarify and define the role of the BUG Patron.
To the new committee whoever they may be, I’d like to offer my best wishes and continued support. It is good for any group or club such as ours to have regular changes in the leadership, and I would encourage all members to consider who they would like on the committee and don’t hesitate to nominate any one they think suitable.
Jim Florence
President

Treasurer’s Report:

Membership Fees:  $1,060
Outgoing: $733
Profit: $327
Balance $2,541.28 plus IMB $730.82 = $3,272.10

Accepted: Bob Lavender     Seconded Jan Furyk

Publicity Officer Report:
The weekly article in the South Coast Register has survived another year despite two changes of Sports Editor and a reduction in available space.
After meetings and negotiations with the latest editor Gillian Lett a new format was agreed to.
On the cycling page, information is to include each week’s new rides, plus a short story of one of the previous weeks rides.  The regular rides will only be included if there is available space.  The regular rides will always be advertised in the ‘Who’s Playing Where’ section on Monday, Wednesday and Friday. The attached photo will only be printed in black and white and only inserted if there is available space.
The other forms of publicity, being via emails from the Secretary, emailing the weekly report via the Yahoo site and accessing the SBUG web page continue to keep members informed.
Thanks need to be forwarded to Wayne Beckenham for compiling the SBUG membership list with contact details and to Bob Lavender for updating the Web page and sending out email alerts to members. Assistant Publicity Officer Rod Pierce also needs to be thanked for adding new riders to the Yahoo listing and forwarding the weekly report and rides calendar as available. Rod also takes on my job whilst I am away on holidays.
Thanks again for everyone’s support re publicity over the last year.
Jan Furyk

Ride Coordinator Annual Report:

The ride coordinator was absent for this meeting
Jan Furyk reported on Thursday rides.
Thursday’s mountain bike rides continues to attract between 6 to 12 riders of long standing; the majority preferring to ride away from traffic and enjoy fire trails and single lane bush tracks.  Two new riders have recently joined Thursday’s group and are keen to become frequent participants.
The South Nowra road works has caused some hassles for cyclists traveling from Nowra and for those traveling from further south to join the start of the rides.  They are often held up in traffic and then running late to be at the start on time and this has resulted in many late departures or cyclists trying to catch up or find riders in the bush.
The weather has mostly been suitable for riding with only a couple of cancellations and one very wet ride from Comerong Island. The scheduled beach rides have varied in outcome with one tough push from Comerong Island to Shoalhaven Heads due to recent rough seas. This ride is no longer an option whilst the river is open to the sea.
Currambene State Forest rides remain difficult due to the extensive ruts caused by four wheel drives and trail bikes.  Many low areas have large collections of water making it very tricky to find a way around.
Later in the year I hope to explore some new areas not yet ridden by SBUG so we can add more options to the program.

The meeting discussed all existing and proposed cycle routes (on and off road) in Ward One (northern area) to determine accuracy and appropriateness. The SBUG delegates felt that the committee was moving away from the original position of the SCC bike plan emphasising ‘priority cycle routes’ for on road cyclists. 1. SCC BIKE PLAN

Report by Bob Lavender on the SCC Bike plan

The second working group, held in Ulladulla, covered the review of chapter 2 of the draft plan, including bike usage statistics, crash analysis data, bike safety and bike network promotion and the SWOT analysis feedback from committee members. The meeting then went on to consider the formation of the plans, guiding principles, objectives and actions: as well as how the committee might ‘map’ priority bike routes. This would need to cover on road, off road and mountain bike routes.  The meeting also began discussion on the best industry standards that could be applied to this plan and the Shoalhaven Cycling Network.

The Working Group will meet 6 times prior to the preparation of a Bike Plan for public exhibition (estimated to occur in early 2013). The Working Group members will be encouraged to review and participate in group discussion at meetings and via email. Also recognizing the interest and representation from people in Ulladulla, at least 2 of the 6 proposed meetings will be held in Ulladulla.

2. CHRISTMAS DINNER

It was proposed by Judi Puru to have the SBUG Christmas dinner at cafe ‘Ninety One Junction’. A tentative booking was made for 14 December. It was agreed that the date and location are suitable. Money to be paid prior to attending dinner.

Jim Florence put forward the idea of donating approx $200 to Slice of Life Australia (SLOA) to provide a shade sail for the North Nowra café. It was agreed that he would make further inquires to determine if Council approval was needed and this would be discussed at the next meeting.

President’s Report:

Thank you for allowing me the privilege of being the President of the Shoalhaven BUG this year. There is a lot that goes on behind the scenes that the President of any organisation has to deal with but my job has been made much easier by the support of not only others on the committee but other BUG members.

I don’t like to single people out but in particular I’d like to thank Maggie Cooper for the time and effort she has put into being the Rides Coordinator and Secretary. I’d also like to thank Paul for the assistance he has given Maggie in this difficult task.

Judi has also been a big support in her role of Treasurer and unofficial Social Secretary, and she can always be relied on when I need assistance or advice.

I’d also like to thank Jan Furyk for the effort she puts into another difficult task of publicity officer, and Rod for the assistance he gives her during her absences.

Bob has been a great support in his capacity as Vice President, the BUG representative on the RMS community forum, the role he is playing in getting the Shoalhaven Bike Plan resurrected, his role in getting the BUG website up and running, and the ongoing task of webmaster.

Our Ride Leader’s are an important part of our group and I would like to thank Peter, Judi, and Jan for the efforts they put into our regular Monday, Thursday and Saturday morning rides. Of course there are many others who lead our Sunday rides and stand in for Peter, Judi and Jan when necessary. I won’t mention names as I would be sure to leave some one out, however we know who they are and their efforts are appreciated.

Back in 1997 (almost 15 years ago today) when I attended the inaugural meeting of the BUG I did not think that we would still be going strong in 2012, particularly after our founder who did practically everything, moved back to Adelaide in 2002. Back then we had one ride per week and today we have four official rides, and one unofficial ride per week, and these rides are generally very well attended. We have had a number of new riders this year and most of these have become members of Bicycle NSW. The only concern I have is that the demographic of our membership seems to be ageing, but I am still very optimistic about our future.

We have had many achievements this year including dragging ourselves into the 21st Century with the establishment of a website, and we participated in bike week. Five of our members undertook Ride Leader Training, and three of these where new members. We have also reinforced our role as the cyclist’s representative group at a local level with our representation on the RMS community forum, our involvement with the Shoalhaven City Council Bike Plan Working Party, and our success in convincing the Council that a replacement program was necessary to remove dangerous storm water grates.

To the new committee whoever they may be, I’d like to offer my best wishes and continued support.

Publicity Officer Report:

Publicity this year has seen a few changes, firstly with the creation of the SBUG web site which has brought us up to date with information technology. Secondly the SCRegister appointed a new sports editor as Rob Crawford decided it was time for a change. Then the paper rearranged the cycling page, limiting the available space for the SBUG report each week. This has resulted in an occasional fractured article with some of the information found in the sports draw page or the report is printed without a photo.

Despite these changes, the SBUG calendar and weekly report is readily available via email and through the Shoalbug Yahoo group mail. I expect this form of communication to  be the most popular and that the SCR article mainly being viewed by non riders or relatives and friends of SBUG riders and interested members of the public.

Thanks to all members for their assistance throughout the year, passing on ride reports and photos, and to Rod for managing the Yahoo site and filling for me when I have been on holidays.

Ride Leaders Report

All rides were well attended in July. Even the scenic Kangaroo Valley ride in inclement weather had a good roll up and we all enjoyed the ride despite the rain and chilly weather. Many thanks to the ride leaders for July – Judi, Paul x 2, and Jan Furyk. I now know not to schedule our popular highlands ride during the school holidays as the coffee shops were overcrowded in Bowral and struggled to cater for our crowd, but it worked in the end and the ride was great and the coffee worth waiting for. I will get the August list out as soon as my computer co operates – (having trouble with it today) but it is listed on Push On and the website I believe.

Publicity report

Jan reported that all was going well with the publicity although the South Coast Register now has a policy of putting our program in the results page rather than with the rest of the article. This is not ideal but is something we will have to live with.

General Business

Bike Week – Jim advised the meeting that we will need two volunteers to assist the Ride Leader for the Huskisson to Booderee ride on the 16th September as there were three start points.

Report on Shoalhaven Bike Plan – Bob reported the he and Jim and Judi had met with James Harris from the Shoalhaven City Council to discuss the proposed bike plan. James’ plan was to set Terms of Reference and advertise for Expressions of Interest from other cycling groups to form a Working Party, with regular meetings to be held to determine priority routes and other aspects of the Bike Plan. The Blue Mountains and Newcastle cycle plans were being used as a benchmark.

Ride leader training – Jim reported that five BUG members, (Warwick Mottram, Chris Bellamy, Kathy Beckenham, Wayne Beckenham, Bill Hughes) had all registered to participate in the ride leader training to be held at Minnamurra on 25th August. A number of members had volunteered to be “actors” for the training.

Proposal to exclude the minutes from the website – (carried over from previous meeting due to lack of a quorum). Concerns had been raised about placing the minutes on the website. The main argument against placing the minutes on the website related to privacy issues and the main argument for placing the minutes on the website was focused on our need as representatives of the cycling community to be transparent. A vote was taken with one voting for the proposal to exclude the minutes from the website and seven voting not to exclude the minutes from the website.

Resignation of Secretary – Jim advised the meeting that Maggie Cooper had resigned as Secretary and that Kathy Beckenham had volunteered to carry out these duties until the AGM.

Thanks from Bob – Bob thanked the meeting for the card he received from the BUG during his recent bereavement.

AGM- Jim reminded the meeting that next month’s meeting included the AGM, and it was agreed to start the meeting half an hour earlier at 6.30PM. Dinner after the AGM was discussed with Postman’s Tavern and Chinese being suggested. Judi volunteered to organize a booking.

Incorporated Association seminar – Jim advised the meeting that he had been invited to attend a seminar held by the Department of Fair Trading at the Bomaderry Bowling Club on the 7th August from 5.30PM to 7.30PM and that he would attend if possible. Any other interested members were welcome to attend.

Looking forward to having more ride leaders.

Publicity report

Jan reports via email to note that the sports section of the newspaper has decreased in size over the past few weeks – this means we need to do more with less. A photo along with the BUG story about our last week’s ride and where we are riding during the week will be found on the main cycling page as usual, but all other general information about weekly rides will be moved onto the draws page. I believe this is how it will be run from now on. A photo from your last ride with a story about the ride plus details of the up-coming ride, contact info, times etc, will be run in Wednesdays Draws page. Thursday rides have been running very well with 10 to 15 riders each week when weather is good.

Ride Leaders Report
May rides generally went well – with the exception on the ride scheduled for the second Sunday which ended up being a leaderless ride but the few that went generally nevertheless enjoyed the ride out to Currarong. Unfortunately a couple of other cyclists did try to join this ride as they had found it on push-on – introduced themselves and were then left to ride alone as the BUG cyclists disappeared into the distance never to be seen again.
Judi’s winery ride with a BBQ lunch was a delight featuring great nibbles from winery produce, extra treats generously provided by Judi in the form of salad and cake, with Paul being a dab hand on the BBQ we enjoyed great company, lunch and the magnificent views to top off a super ride.
The Nerriga to Tarago ride … with the unexpected closing of the Oallen Ford Bridge for urgent repairs a decision had to be made to change the ride to Goulburn to Tarago Return..which afforded us a loop return to Goulburn via the Collector Road. 14 cyclists rugged up against the chilly winds on the Saturday and braved the weather ..We were well looked after by the Loaded Dog Hotel and were rewarded with a glorious day on the Sunday to cycle back to Goulburn. This was voted a much better ride that the original proposed ride and will be no doubt repeated in the future for those that missed out this time.
Thank you to ride leaders Kathy and Wayne, Judi and Paul – and all the Tail End Charlies – a special Thanks To Tom McDonald for driving the main support vehicle and being paparazzi for the weekend away in Tarago.

Date for the Ride Leaders Training has been set for 25th August. From 08.30 at Minnamurra Public School. Costs so far are: Hall Hire, $148 & Ride Leader Trainer $100 (Guy Braithwaite) also a fee of $33 per Trainee to Bicycle NSW. We have 7 starters and Kiama has 3. Kiama BUG has advised they bore the cost of the hall hire last time and have asked that we bear the cost this time. All participants need to be BNSW members. We will need to provide some refreshments i.e. tea, coffee, biscuits. We also need to provide one “actor” per trainee. Total costs for the fees for the day will be $479 if we pay training costs for our trainees. BNSW will provide insurance cover for the day.
Kathy Beckenham proposed a motion that SBUG ride Leader Trainees be reimbursed for their training costs for this day, $33 ea.
Seconded Bob Lavendar.

4. Launch of BUG Website
Bob Lavendar brought along Bumper Stickers for the promotion of the website – his donation – we thanked Bob for this generous donation.
Bob is keen to hear from Members any news or cycling stories to be included on the website.
Maggie questioned the necessity of having meeting minutes on the open website as it may contravene privacy issues and also noted that other groups such as the Velo Club and Waterdragons do not publish their minutes for the general public to read, but instead circulate to active members or have a members log in. Those present at the meeting generally agreed that minutes should be forwarded to active members only – as Maggie does currently.

Bob, however, moved a notice of motion that the monthly meeting minutes be removed from the website for the next month until it is further considered – to be voted on at the July meeting as he claims there was not enough members present to make this decision at this meeting.

5. World Environment Day
– this event was cancelled due to inclement weather

6. Proposal for donation for technical Aid for Disabled
Margaret Holder had tabled documents at the last meeting but little is known so Maggie offered to research this for a possible donation – to be discussed at the next meeting.
7. Dangerous Grate.
Peter Lawrence has recently had a fall causing him serious injury when his bicycle wheel fell into a grate located in the car park of the Graham St., Fruit shop.
A letter is to be sent to the owner of the property alerting them to the dangers of such a grate to cyclists and recommending replacement with a safer cover for the drain. SCC could perhaps offer advice on appropriate recommended covers for theses situations.
Wayne Beckenham advises the importance of making other cyclists aware of hazards such as this.

8. Cycling Hazards.
Bev and Ron Lukin have been on the job alerting SCC and SBUG about the Cycling hazards in the Shoalhaven. Ron presented to the meeting photographs of hazards worth reporting to the Hazard site and bringing to the attention of the Council
* Ferry Lane – shrubs still not trimmed preventing good vision on that corner area
* Milbank Road – confusing speed signage
* Princes Hwy South Nowra – cement blocks on road edges leaving no cycling area at all
* Under the Northern side of Nowra Bridge the cycle path has large cracks in the surface
*Another Dangerous grate in the car park behind the post office at Berry
* Bolong Road near the Milk Factory – no verge or apron after the roundabout
*no Beware of Cyclists on the Bridge on the Princes Hwy towards Berry
We encourage all SBUG members to please take the time to
report these hazards on the appropriate internet site.

8. Website Launch Celebration Dinner
Maggie suggested as the website is finally launched now that we should mark this auspicious occasion with a celebration dinner. Kohls Indian Restaurent in Kinghorne St., Nowra was suggested and recommended and a date was set for the Thursday 21st June – 6.30pm
Please let Maggie know if you would like to come so we can book a table. tel; 44478332

Rides all went ahead generally with good weather – thanks to ride leaders Paul, Judi, Jan,  and the tail end Charlies.  Thanks to Tom McDonald for driving the support vehicle for the Nerriga Ride. We have around 14 starters already for the Tarago ride and Tom has generously agreed to come along again to drive. Numbers limited to availability of accommodation and as of tonight only 3 rooms remaining.

Publicity report

Jan Furyk reports all going well with publicity.

General business

*Discussion on Bev and Ron Lukin’s submission to council which has resulted in a 80km limit on JindyAndy Lane.  Ron had hoped a continuous 60km limit would have been placed on Moss St/ Comerong Island Road  from the High School through Terrera  to Jindyandy Lane intersection, due to the many safety issues along this route.  This has not occurred. Of particular interest is the intersection of Ferry Lane and Moss St., where there is limited vision for traffic and no verge on the road for cyclists. The meeting generally agreed that it would be useful for  many members to use the Report a hazard site (http://www.bicycleinfo.nsw.gov.au/cgi-bin/index.cgi?action=reporthazard.form ) this site goes to RMS which will refer it to our local council to suggest a one metre verge be added to the road at this intersection.

Nigel also recommends that riders need to clearly indicate turning onto Ferry Lane well before the intersection.

*Ride Leaders First Aid Training;

Both Peter Hewlett and Meno Van Dorn have agreed to undertake the Seniors First Aid Training.

*Ride Leader Training;

James Florence has contacted BNSW and it would be possible to organize a Ride Leader Training course in our area. We believe we need 6 need local volunteers to undertake this training to begin to organize this – then we would invite participants from other areas nearby.

Please contact James Florence  or Maggie Cooper for further information.

*World Environment Day Expo – 2nd June

Volunteers are needed to be present at the Lady Denman museum in June to promote SBUG.  James Florence will be there from 8am until 11am but volunteers are needed to take over from him from 11am until 2pm – Please contact James if you can be there. James to contact Kathy Wiseham for pamphlets to hand out on the day.

*Wednesday Beginners Ride.

Judi Puru put forward a motion to take out a paid advertisement in the local newspaper monthly (twice) to promote her Wednesday Beginners ride. Cost per advertisement $105

Seconded Bob Lavender

*Dungog PedalFest; 7th, 8th, 9th September,

Kathy Beckenham recommends this weekend as a great cycling weekend. We could car pool and/or go as a group – expressions of interest to Maggie Cooper –(44478332) accomodation would have to be planned soon for this event.

*Bike Week; 15th to 23rd September

Kathy Wiseham from SCC has again sent an invitation to us to participate in the

Bike Week Events in the Shoalhaven –  James Florence will contact Kathy to set up a meeting time with her to discuss the weeks events.

*SBUG Website Progress Report – Bob Lavender.

The SBUG Website is now active for members to view. Shoalhavenbug.com.au

Bob welcomes comments, constructive criticism and any suggestions for links to include on the website –

please send to Bobs email address; blavendar57@bigpond.com

The Website will be launched some time in June. Bob is having stickers printed to promote the website.

Nigel Holder reports he has recently obtained a camera that records the traffic around him as he cycles -and has been able to report to police incidents of dangerous driving with the film footage and number plates successfully recorded – this has enabled the police to follow up and report back to him of their contact with the drivers.

Nigel also suggests when we are participating in rides away from the local area that   we could meet in Nowra Visitors centre car park and car pool from there to avoid taking unnecessary vehicles. Also on out of town rides – if members have a CB radio it may be useful to take them along in case of no reception for mobile phones and for ease of contact between ride leader and Tail end charlie or support vehicle.

Nigel Holder put forward a motion that participating cyclists pay a fee of $3 on all rides that the Ride Co-ordinator  designates a support vehicle is needed.  and  this money be given to the owner of the support vehicle to assist in covering running costs. Seconded Bob Lavendar. This information will be included in ride details on the Push-on Calendar.

Nigel also put forward a motion that two  Tail End Charlies be selected so that no-one is left riding alone at the end of a ride.

Seconded Margaret Holder

Against – Bob Lavender – who felt it should be at the discretion of the Ride Leader to make this decision.

Carried

Generally, it was agreed– in principal no-one should ride alone (on a BUG group ride) – not necessary to be side by side but at least within sight of each other.

Margaret Holder tabled a document relating to the Technical Aid for the Disabled, for discussion if we would like to donate to this cause – as it was late we decided to wait for the next meeting to allow further discussion this one.

Meeting ended 9.15pm.
